Stream A: Academic development and selection of the best technology

  • Construction of functional units: heating, cooling, ventilation, and moisture response.
  • MAPE (monitoring, modeling, and performance evaluation) approach

T1. Design and construction of heating/cooling unit, Prof. Mariusz Adamski,

  • We use either a monobloc or a water-sourced heat pump (WSHP). The latter has a cold-water tank (CWT) from which thermal energy is extracted and a hot-water (HWT) tank for space heating. If needed, we will also have a domestic hot water tank.
  • Coefficient of performance (COP) of a heat pump is the absolute temperature of the hot water tank, divided by the difference between the low and high terminals of the heat pump.

In this project, we analyze three types of heating/ cooling systems:  (a) A dwelling heated either with an air-sourced heat pump (ASHP), or a water-sourced heat pump (WSHP) with two water tanks. The ASHP sends hot water to a buffer water tank that operates the heating system and also supplies water to an electrically heated domestic hot water (DHW) unit. (b) District Climatic Network with many buildings, the first in category A, while the others use WSHP.  Air transported with DCN is carried along the staircase line to each dwelling above the entrance door. (c) As above, but hot water is periodically transferred to CWT.

  • The heating unit operates in an adaptable heating/ cooling regime with a 5-degree ramp, temperature change of 1 deg.K/hour

Collaborations: J. Sowa, PW, ventilation system, M. Samsel, Olsztyn, Control system. Deliverables: (1) design of three heating units for hydronic systems, (2) demonstrating and analyzing heating/cooling units.

I1-t2. Developing and supporting the production of materials for the universal climatic panel, Prof. Regina Jeziorska,  Institute of Industrial Chemistry, Warsaw

Requirements and test methods (consulting (Mark Bomberg),. Choice of biofibers (cardboard, core, hemp, jute, plastic and metal fibers). Note starting with the shared US Patent and developing a new EU patent.

  • Panel structure: (one or two 4 mm thick corrugated polycarbonate, treated on both surfaces, Eco wrap with ½ in PEX tubing, encapsulated with Eco wrap, and covered with a microbiological control layer. Two types of panels, e.g. 25x1200x2500 mm (wall), and 25x700x2500mm (under window). Finding and training a company capable of manufacturing these two materials

Stage 1 for pilot products, stage 2 for final products at 18 months,

Collaborations: M. Czekon, Bratislava, U., Sk – use of PCM in the eco-wrap, Marek Samsel, Olsztyn, finding an industrial manufacturer for universal panels.

Deliverables:1) Eco-wrap (in Polish, ekotynk) sprayed, if possible, eventually trowel grade material, and (2) surface M-spray (microbes/fungus-controlled), (3) EU patent, (4) selecting and training a company manufacturing the eco-wrap and M-spray

T3a. Universal panels and a panelized wall system, Prof. Richard Slawik, Mendel    Uni., Brno,

The panel itself comprises a 2500x1000x4 mm corrugated polycarbonate substrate, sprayed on both sides, and a 20 mm-thick, high-density extruded polystyrene perimeter frame. The frame, with a 50 mm distance from the polycarbonate side and top edges, provides an internal field of 2400 x 850 mm. In this field, 4 PEX tubes may have a total length of about 9 meters, with near-top ingress and egress to the next panel or to a return tube located in the 50 mm-wide air space. Those spaces contain PEX tubing and ecowrap and are covered with protective textile or plastic mesh. Furthermore, a separate, small, horizontal panel system (2.5 x 0.70 m) is to be developed for under-window installation.

Collaborations: J. Sowa, PW, ventilation in the channels. Deliverables: Two panel systems (without and with additional thermal insulation and frame to mount them. Train professional wall installers doing applications in the REDBREC project.

T3b Small demonstration house and all elements of PTAC technology, roof, ground, solar and thermal storage on a lot near Olsztyn, inz.  Marek Samsel, Olsztyn

This PTAC demonstration house near the town of Olsztyn is built ASAP, before other technology demonstrations, to function as a public demonstration site for the project time
